When you take a portrait photo try not to have any distractions (objects). An interesting thing is to play with the cameras settings. Keep things light. Try to ask the person what do they like what they don't like so you can hide those parts. Because if they want to hide something and you keep on showing that part well they're not going to like picture. Try to know their personality. Its better if you keep a few shadows on the face. But not too much shadows. Your trying to stay simple but trying to tell a story.

This video is about taking picture with a regular camera and making them look like if they were taken by a Dslr.  Point and shoot is a regular automatic camera. a dslr is a big camera. Lightning is really important when you take a picture. The highlight and the shadow is what make the shape of the object. When taking a picture try to stand 5 feet away from the background so the background can come out a little blurry. Macro mode is another way to say close up mode. if the color does not come out the color you want then you can make it colder or warmer with the editor ( iPhoto). Or you can change the light in exposure. You can also try portrait mode to make the pictures a little brighter.
